Problem
Disney needed a way to pair its franchised consumer products with digital content and gather real-time, per-item sales data, something traditional retail integrations could not provide:
- Retail POS systems operate in isolation
Barcode scans generate sales receipts but do not communicate licensing events back to the content owner.
- Digital–physical bundling was manual and unscalable
Adding complimentary digital content to physical DCP items required manual code insertion or post-purchase instructions, without visibility or control.
- No direct customer relationship
Traditional retail workflows prevented Disney from capturing customer data or tracking activation behavior.
Disney needed a live, automated, rights-controlled pipeline that extended from POS barcode scans to license issuance.
Solution
The Media Licensing platform was integrated deeply into Hamleys’ operational systems, creating a unified retail-to-digital flow.
1. POS and inventory API integration
Hamleys’ cashier terminals and inventory databases were connected directly to the Aggregion backend:
- Every scanned Disney DCP barcode was logged in real time
- Each sale triggered license issuance logic
- No manual data reconciliation required
2. Automatic generation of activation codes
When a qualifying product was purchased:
- The POS received a license token from the backend
- A unique activation code was generated instantly
- The code printed directly on the customer’s receipt, eliminating physical inserts or scratch cards
3. Real-time visibility and analytics for Disney
Every activation and every sale of a bundled item appeared in Disney’s dashboard:
- per-store
- per-SKU
- per-day
- per-customer activation patterns
This provided operational intelligence that was previously impossible in a retail context.
Outcome
The deployment created a measurable improvement in data visibility and promotional efficiency:
- Live sales telemetry for each DCP item tied to digital content
- Direct customer acquisition, as each activation provided customer contact data
